Big data analysis could be critical piece of the puzzle for ultimately curing cancer, writes former ACM president David Patterson. If the 1.7 million Americans who will get cancer this year were to have their healthy and tumor cells sequenced, it would generate one exabyte of raw data. SoundCloud launches radio feature Stations
Music streaming service SoundCloud on Wednesday launched its radio feature, Stations, that allows users to create customized radio stations based on preferred artists and songs. To create a new radio station, users have to search for a term, track or content stream, and then tap the 'Start Station' option. Microsoft plans to build underwater datacenters
Microsoft on Sunday unveiled a new
research initiative 'Project Natick', under which it plans to build
underwater datacenters. To study the feasibility of such datacenters,
Microsoft took a year to deploy its own subsea datacenter in the Pacific
Ocean. Microsoft is currently looking for low-cost, high responsive and
environmentally sustainable cloud datacenter solutions.

Google on Wednesday announced a new service called Cloud Machine Learning for developers in a limited preview at its NEXT Google Cloud Platform user conference. It consists of two parts – one allows to build machine learning models using data, and another offers Google products like translation, photo and speech recognition APIs, which the developers can use into their apps.
